It’s Time for Rugby Again!

Daniel Conn - Sydney Roosters David Williams - Manly Sea Eagles Kayne Lawton - West Tigers

I have the Foxtel DVR set to record all the first week games in high def.  I may be picking a new team to cheer for this year, the ongoing sexual assault trial makes it awkward.  After watching this weekend and checking out the team rosters I’ll have a better idea.

Flickr - flickered

yahoo

I got a link from Aussiebum, sharing their photostream on Flickr.  I had almost forgotten about Flickr.  When we first moved to Australia, a good friend in Madison bought a year on Flickr to help me share photos of our new home.  It was nice, but with the number of free photo hosting sites caused me to look elsewhere for longterm use, and the limit of only 200 photos for free hosting caused me to remove almost all of my photos simply so I could view my own collection.

I also used Flock as a social browser, so it was convenient to keep up on everyone’s photostreams.  Eventually I moved more to Chrome for the speed, Cometbird for saving media files, and IE for nice 64-bit browsing.  Over time it seemed most of my Flickr friends came to the same conclusion I did and most of them haven’t posted new photos for a year or more.  I cleaned up my contact list and added the keepers to my Google reader.

What photo-sharing services do you use? and what are things you like about them?

My Chemistry Experiment

DCP_0002

My big tub (the white thing on the left) has pretty much stopped bubbling.  I had hoped it would go on for a couple more days so I wouldn’t have to bottle after work.  If the hydrometer readings are the same tomorrow night as tonight – it’s time to bottle.  The most active phase of fermentation can be anywhere from 4 to 10 days, with temperature being a big variable.  I have the bottles in the boxes to the left of the picture.  When I first brewed, I recycled beer bottles from cases bought at a liquor store.  This time, I picked up new swing top bottles that are a little heavier.  After bottling, I get to wait several weeks before we knock a couple back.

The smaller jug is apple-pear wine.  Wine takes longer but I have old wine bottles for it to go in when it’s ready.  The red thing, with the tampon applicator sticking out of it on the right, is a sprayer.  You push the bottle, mouth down, onto the plunger and it sprays the inside with a sterilizer.  The little tray of baggies holds many of the additives used in wine making like; grape tannins, pectin enzymes, and different types of food acids.

Not seeing the parade

Last weekend we decided to make a day of seeing Sydney’s Mardi Gras parade.  We’d gone 3 years ago – the first year we were here.  Mardi Gras is one of my favorite holidays.  While it’s nothing like Mardi Gras in Louisiana, it’s certainly an excuse to have some fun.

DCP_0003 We decided to start the day by seeing the BIG movie.  I’d wondered if Avatar – even on the huge Imax screen and in 3D – would be worth $65 (for both of us with a popcorn and 2 sodas).

It’s a good movie and the theatre was more comfortable than I expected.  The 3D is nice, but there were several points in the movie – particularly during fast moving sequences, where the screen flicker wasn’t only noticeable, it was annoying.  I’m a little surprised that Sony has a goal of 30-50% of new TVs being 3D in just a few years.  When it works, it’ looks great, but it has a little way to go.

We didn’t realize that Chinese New Year was also part of the weekend’s events.  There was a rowing contest in the harbour.  Did I mention what wonderful weather we had?

We took a walk around the Maritime Museum – just around, not in.  Perhaps we’ll go inside another day.

I wanted to see the inside of the Opera House; we’ve certainly gone past it a number of times.  We grabbed a ferry across to Circular Quay and made our way around the shore.

DCP_0029Along the way we stopped to see a street performer who calls himself Psycho Sam.   A lot of energy, great audience interaction, and really good at talking the crowd into handing over some money for his efforts.  The only bad part of the show was that it delayed us just long enough to miss the last tour at the Opera House by about 10 minutes.  I guess I’ll see the inside another time.

IMGA0368Finally, we walked down to Hyde Park to look for a place to watch the parade go by.  We thought it would have been really nice to have a view like the people with balconies overlooking the street.  IMGA0372As it turned out we found ourselves in the middle of a crowd of people that didn’t seem to mind pressing their sweaty flesh against everyone else.  At this point we decided it wasn’t working for us.  Between my growing leg pain and John’s irritation with the crowd, we decided to pack it in just before everything started and watch the parade over a bottle of wine in our own living room.

Sunday Blasphemy – Pope Elton

elton-john-flamboyantThis is a little dated, but a few weeks ago Elton John made the off-hand comment that he thought Jesus (the deity, not the guy dating Madonna) was a super intelligent gay dude.  I can’t believe the outrage this caused among some people.

It’s not so much that I’m surprised people are bent out of shape at the suggestion that Jesus might have liked some dick now and then – I’ve met plenty of Christians who seem to feel their ultimate religious duty is to condemn anything approaching ‘the gay'.  I’m shocked that people would take Elton John’s opinion on the subject with any seriousness.

At least they pretend they are outraged.  Some talked about how they had been fans of EJ in the past, but would swear off him now.  So all the years of flamboyance… oh wait, they seem to like that style of dress when it comes to the Pope – and at least some of them seem to put weight in his opinion.  The dear man has put so much blow up his nose, he’s lucky to be able to speak in complete sentences.

sir-elton-johnPeople shouldn’t be surprised, much less outraged if Elton said he thought Jesus was a duck that tasted delicious with an orange sauce.

Fountain Designs

One day when we own a house again and we do a proper garden I’d like to have a water feature.  The big question is what type?  Do I go modern and vortex_w_ball o_203648104_o have some sort of basic shape.  Perhaps something classic like a maiden pouring water from a jug.  It has occurred to me to go cheeky and do some sort of urination joke.  (one problem with that is I don’t really like the idea of little boy penis around and I think grown man penis would be a bit crude).

12-odd-and-bizarre-fountains-boy-urinating-on-a-frog 4So yesterday I found an idea.  I doubt it is commercially available, and if it were, it would probably be rather expensive.  However, I don’t think it would be that difficult to construct something like this.  … a little chicken wire, a little concrete or foam, some wood, some tubing… The head might be hardest part to find.  Perhaps I could experiment with mold making and create a cast of my own head.
