Battlestar Galactica

The Australian version of the SciFi Channel has caught up to the BattleStar Galactica series in the US.  They’re now showing them “fast-tracked” from the SciFi Channel in the States.  It’s cool cuz in addition of BSG, I’m catching up with Psych, Stargate: Atlantis, and Eureka.  There’re almost all at the same place they were when we left Wisconsin a little over 2 years ago.

I’ve always wondered about the opening theme for BSG.  At times I can almost make out words or wonder what language it is.  Today a friend on Facebook posted a link (see player above) which I’ve “borrowed”.  The series has religion as a recurring theme.  They cylons claim the belief in a one true god, while the human colonies have a created variant of the Greek gods.

I guess it shouldn’t have been a surprise to learn the opening theme has a spiritual story as well. It’s an ancient Hindu mantra.

Oh God! Thou art the Giver of Life,
Remover of pain and sorrow,
The Bestower of happiness,
Oh! Creator of the Universe,
May we receive thy supreme sin-destroying light,
May Thou guide our intellect in the right direction.

  1. This is really cool. Had no idea that it actually meant anything.
