We had a visitor this morning. We've seen one on the back fence, but this is the closest a kookaburra has come to the house. They're an odd looking bird from a non-native point of view. Their head seems unusually large for the body size. They like meat; worms and insects mostly. The call of the kookaburra sounds like excited monkeys and is most often used as a means of marking their territory.
This is an
excellent site to learn about Australian birds and help identify what you would see and hear in your backyard.
